We see a different side of John in this chapter. Lenina throws herself at him and at first he tells her he loves her but does not want to sleep with her. She continues to try and he is appalled and disgusted with her. He even shouts, "you dammed whore." This chapter changed my opinion of John.
Bernard's famous stature is shot down when John will not come out and be his puppet. John refused to be a show for Bernard and leaves a lot of important people upset. Bernard finally got put into his place and is shown he will not always be important to the society. Bernard goes to speak Hemholtz again too which signifies him slightly becoming him so again.
Bernard's character changes drastically in this chapter. He is turning into arrogant boy. It makes me question his morals and beliefs. He even decided to no longer speak to Hemholtz, who has been sort of a mentor to him the whole time
These two chapters are very brief but also a lot of significant events happen. It all moved a little quick when they got back to the hatchery. Bernardo was called in to talk to DHC and as soon as he is threatened to be sent away he brings in Linda and John. this is a change of pace because for once the DHC did not have control over the situation. He was humiliated and I'm curious to see how he reacts to their arrival.
I didn't realize until this chapter that other world's even existed. It was interesting to see how horrified Lenina was about the situations. She did not approve of any of the things Bernardo did and interpreted everything differently. This chapter also let us see that the DHC was more involved in the reservations then we thought. He had a son that was living there and that was shocking.
I thought the "celebration" was super weird. I wasn't certain what was going on but it seemed important because Bernardo was stressed over being late. I could tell Bernardo was not enjoying it and felt miserable, but everyone else was excited and enjoying myself. This chapter really brought out Bernardo opinion. But I couldn't quite pin what the meeting thing was all about.
This chapter was very interesting, to say the least. It was not only disturbing, but just flat out wrong. I definitely didn't agree with what they were doing with the children. I just can't see where they are going with this. I just keep getting more and more confused. Especially when they split into 3 different conversations
In chapter 2 the book explains to us how the children are raised. They hypnotized little infants by placing flowers and books in front of them and if they touched them they got shocked. They also had sound effects of explosions and sirens to show the "dangers" of books. It all seems quite ridiculous to us, but to them they feel like it is justified.
The first chapter of Brave New World was extremely confusing for me. I had a hard time picturing the setting and wasn't expecting the first chapter to be so complex. There was a lot of scientific diction that made it confusing to fully grasp what was going on. Overall I am interested in finding out where this book will go, and it seems like a good read.
